Sweet Po-Taters
Today, we had sweet potatoes! David's first non-cereal food! He didn't really have much of a reaction, so I'm guessing that's a good thing. He ate them like a champ! I tried them too and they were tasty!

First Real Food!
Recently David has been waking up more frequently at night really hungry. Our pediatrician said this may be a cue that it is time to start real foods. I ideally wanted to wait until he was six months old, but he's a bigger baby and if the kid wants some food, then by all means...
The first time went pretty well!! I was over at my parents house for dinner and Zach was working so I figured they wouldn't mind at all helping me out. I'm glad they did, as I had no idea how messy cereal was!! I thinned it out quite a bit since it was his first time and it got all over the place! Plus, he was super excited so his flailing arms didn't help much either. But, boy we had fun!
Here's a video of the big event, complete with commentary about Easter breakfast plans.
He really seemed to like it and eat quite a bit the first time, but the last three nights haven't quite gone the same. He's not really interested and most of it comes right back out, but I know this is normal. We'll keep trying, but if he's not ready, that's alright. We might try oatmeal in a few days because I've heard some babies like that better. I think we'll wait to start veggies and fruit for a couple more weeks. He'll be six months in just a few weeks anyway! He's getting so big!
Oh, and also, while he sure did zonk right out on the way home, he didn't sleep much different that night. Old wives tales, I tell ya.

David is Five Months Old
I think month five has been the fastest yet! I really feel like I just wrote his four month update!
The biggest news is definitely starting daycare and me going back to work. So far, we are doing pretty well with it. I started him back the week before I went back to work, and that was definitely a good idea. I honestly thought I would be totally fine dropping him off. Wowzers, was I wrong!! I was blubbering mess. The owner of the place actually followed me out the front door just to make sure I was alright! Yikes. Luckily David did just fine and was happy as a clam when I went to pick him up. He's been there two weeks now and is finally starting to take naps more regularly and is getting in some good playtime with the other kiddos. I'm also doing much better with it. No crying since the first day. However, I do practically sprint to my car at the end of the day because I'm so excited to go get him.
Unfortunately he also got his first cold. It's a doozy. It was so bad Thursday that we ended up at Children's Mercy at 3am because he wasn't sleeping, wasn't eating and would scream at the top of his lungs then puke up the tiny amount he did eat. Um, apparently this is all very normal for baby colds, so, they told us at the hospital. Yep. We are first time parents, that's for sure. Oh well, better safe than sorry, no? I just hope this thing passes quickly. He's still not feeling well. He got booted from daycare today with a mild fever and I came home sick from work too so it looks like I'm getting in a little extra cuddle time tomorrow. As much as I love it, I just want him (us!) to get better. Poor baby.
We still aren't sleeping through the night. He does it maybe once a week. Right now he goes to bed at 7pm then gets up anywhere between 4 and 5:30am for a bottle. Then it's a crap-shoot if he goes back down or not. There have been a few times where we just have to start our day, but he usually crashes back out within 45 minutes of playtime. Good for him, but not so fun for me on the days I work. There's no more going back to bed for me! He also will randomly cry throughout the night to be flipped back over. While we know he CAN roll over he likes to get on his back and flail his arms and legs around like a upside-down turtle until we go put him back on his tummy. I have a feeling we need to stop giving in or it's going to become a really nasty habit.
His favorite activity is standing. He will not let you hold him in your lap with him sitting. He. Must. Stand. I've been working on teaching him to sit on the floor but after a couple seconds of that nonsense he arches his back and tries to stand. He really likes his bounce-bounce baby exersauscer and is finally figuring out how some of the toys work. He still very much prefers to chew on links I hook together for him and his friend Sophie the giraffe over anything else. He's also started to really like standing at the back door or out on the deck and watching cars drive by. He is just content as can be when we stand there, so we do it a lot!
We got him a high chair and he really loves to sit in that while I'm in the kitchen or we are eating. He's starting to show interest in food so I think we'll be starting cereal here soon to get some practice in before we start baby food! I really want to try to make some of my own, but we'll see how that goes. My vegetable cooking skills are mostly non-existent. Shame shame. Someone told me 'all you have to do is steam the veggies then mash them' to which I replied, 'um, how do you steam veggies?'. I have much growing up to do...
He's also started laughing this month. It is so adorable! He's really ticklish under his chin so whenever I tighten the straps on his car seat or wash under his chin he just giggles and giggles! So adorable! He still talks softly to himself (especially on the way home from daycare! I imagine he's just telling me about his day. So cute!) but is starting to discover his voice and will make louder sounds when he's really excited. Although he seems to have the most fun blowing raspberries! He will just spit and spit and spit. Ah, babies.
He keeps getting bigger and bigger! Right now he can wear 6 month clothes, but his 9 month stuff fits a lot better length-wise. I can't believe it. I bet you he's in 12 month clothes in the next month and a half!
Overall he's just a ton of fun right now. I can't wait for him to figure out this sitting on his own thing! Once we have that down I know it's only a matter of time before he's on the move! Time really does need to slow down...
note: he was just taking a snooze in the car seat at a wedding that's why the straps are loose. We were not driving. Don't want the car seat police coming after me!
Here's a video of him laughing. :) Don't be jealous of my awesome cinematography skills.
